When the SG body style took over from the single-cutaway Gibson Les Paul in 1961, several variations came along with it. This is one of those more recent variations.
The guitar started as a Gibson SG Deluxe Hellfire Red, a short-lived SG model set apart by its unique triple pickup configuration and Maestro tremolo bridge. It was only produced between 1998 - 1999.
Like the greatest SGs ever made, the SG Deluxe is built on a foundation of solid mahogany, a tone-wood with a long tradition at Gibson.
Now enters into play Luther Dickinson. He used this guitar with the Black Crowes. In the beginning he used the guitar without any apparent modification. Slowly but surely he started to modify the guitar. After 2008 he started to strip the guitar, then he removed the tremolo bridge and finally he modified the pickups and the pick-guard. Today Lollar Prototype "El Rayo" Humbuckers are fitted to the guitar.
The guitar was extensively used by both Rich Robinson and Luther Dickinson.
